ABBY MAITLAND
Background:
Height: 5'4" Age: 28 First Appearance: Series 1 - Episode 1 Final Appearance: Series 5 - Episode 6 Biography: Prior to the Anomaly phenomenon, Abby worked as a zookeeper at Wellington Zoo, where her love for reptiles flourished in her role there. As a result of her profession, Abby accidentally became involved in the Anomaly operation when she discovered a Coelurosauravus that was found by young boy Ben Trent in the Forest of Dean. Whilst looking to return the flying reptile, she stumbled upon the lone Scutosaurus, and inadvertently Professor Cutter and his recently gathered group of investigators. Abby was part of the group who first discovered the Anomalies, and was one of few people in the entire world who knew of the Anomaly incursions. Early on, she develops a crush for Stephen Hart, which quickly diminished after Stephen was bitten by the Arthropleura and forgot his self proclaimed attraction to Abby. However, her relationship with Connor continues to grow as he moves into her flat. Abby keeps Rex as a pet, unbeknownst to Cutter, and when Connor leaves the flat window open the reptile escapes, enters Abby's Mini, and escapes once more, this time onto a golf course. Connor and Abby do eventually find him, and Abby forgives Connor for his stupidity. Abby is more empathetic to Cutter than most, in regards to the Claudia Brown incident. She sympathetically apologises to Cutter, despite not knowing or believing Cutter's story. And post-Claudia's dissapearance, Abby is clearly more skilled and trained in regards to firearm situations. |

The defining moment of Abby's relationship with Connor comes as she is stolen by an aquatic Mer Creature, and held captive in a sewage system. Both Connor and Abby had been arguing at the time, and with Cutter dismissed from the search by Lester, Connor unwillingly helps Cutter in his separate hunch, now disconnected from the ARC Teams investigation. Cutter's hunch is correct, and despite believing her to be dead, Abby is found, alive. But as the Mer Queen takes Abby back through the Anomaly to the future shoreline, Connor races through the Anomaly to save her. In a situation that resulted in Abby taking Connor's hand for dear life, he confesses his love for her (despite having a 'girlfriend' at the time). The pair survive the encounter as Cutter arrives just in time.
Abby's knowledge of animals became a vital asset to the ARC, and her experience as a zoologist meant she cares for animals that get left behind in the 21st Century, notably the Columbian Mammoth, and later Sid and Nancy the Diictodon. She is, much like the rest of the team, deeply effected by Cutter's death, but keeps battling, and supporting Connor in dealing with the sudden tragedy, along with her relationship with new team leader Danny being a positive one.
In the mission to stop Helen Cutter, Abby and Connor become isolated in the Cretaceous period, with no way home. They spend a year there, hunting for food, desperate to stay alive for as long as they can, clinging onto any hope that they would one day make it back. It's her and Connor's drive to continue with Professor Cutter's work that allows them to survive for as long as they do. Their relationship grows ever closer here, with each of them utilising their skills in order to survive. Connor's knowledge of prehistory, coupled with Abby's excellent knowledge of nature became essential. And when they do eventually make it back, they discover the brand new ARC Operation, reinvested in by a government-entrepreneurial link. Both of them are told that field operatives must have military background however, both being relieved of their jobs. Abby was soon rehired as keeper of the menagerie, the menagerie which continued to hold the Mammoth, Dracorex, Diictodons, and most notably, Rex.
Abby becomes even more strong-willed and independent as events progress, and Connor drifts away from her to work for Philip. As their relationship dwindles, she determinedly shows him the path he must take, bringing Connor back to his senses before it is too late. Together, Abby and the team stop New Dawn's destruction of the planet, and simultaneously help deal with the Convergence of Anomalies from causing harm to life. Once the horror ended, she realises what she has to live for, and proposes to Connor Temple.
